Congratulations!
You just completed Step 1 of starting a PLA at your law school—letting us know about it.
Now, let’s talk next steps…
Before you do anything else, go ahead and bookmark this page in your browser (or write down the URL). That’s because this page cannot be accessed from the navigation menu on our website—it’s super secret and especially for you!
Here are the next steps for starting a PLA at your law school.
Scroll down to get more details on any stage of the process that is relevant to you!
1
Talk to your classmates!
Chances are, you aren’t the only person at your law school who is interested in plaintiffs’ law or recognizes the need for a PLA at your school.
If you don’t know who those other students are, start putting out feelers with a simple interest form. And even if you already know other students who are interested in starting a PLA, you should still circulate an interest form because there may be more!
Send the interest form to your class listserv and/or post it in a class group chat if you have one.
2
Learn your school’s requirements for starting a new student organization
Most schools have some set of requirements for starting new student organizations. For instance, you may be required to:
At the very least, designate two Co-Presidents and one Treasurer.
Secure a Faculty Advisor (consider asking a Torts professor).
Create a charter/constitution for your organization (see below).
3
Draft your charter and define your mission.
Your school will almost certainly require that you create a charter for your new PLA. In addition, you should consider sitting down and writing out a mission statement or just listing out some values that you’d like your PLA to embody. Think through what you want to accomplish with your PLA and how it will fit into the wider culture at your school. Having a vision will keep you motivated and prevent you from getting diverted once things ramp up!

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
